SERIAL PAINTINGS

It was during a trip to Ostia Antica with the Poiriers in 1969, during his stay at the Villa Medici, that GRATALOUP began his first rubbings.

These consisted of rubbing the walls of the city in order to immortalize on paper the imprint of the wear of time. As these rubbings do not have sufficient symbolic significance for him, he will decide to draw the imprint to be rubbed himself through drawings that he will lacerate in order to constitute a matrix.

This is how his first series, " Palmiers à la Villa Médicis", was born.  as well as the pictorial style that we know him today.
