LEVERKUSEN - GERMANY - GRATALOUP A NEW SYMBOLIST
November 20, 2005 – January 29, 2006
Presented in Leverkusen, Germany, from 2005 to 2006, this exhibition marked an important stage in GRATALOUP’s international career. Following his major exhibitions at the Chapelle Saint-Louis de la Salpêtrière in Paris and the Chapelle de la Trinité in Lyon, the artist was invited by the cultural department of the Bayer Group to exhibit at the Erholungshaus, a prestigious venue that had previously welcomed major figures of modern art including Picasso, Schiele, Otto Dix, Chillida, and Henri Laurens.
Bringing together nearly one hundred paintings, the exhibition explored the fundamental themes that run throughout GRATALOUP’s work: nature, transformation, and the invisible forces that animate life. From the gardens of Giverny, conceived as a tribute to Claude Monet, to the spirit of the mountain and the continual metamorphoses of the vegetal world, each series unfolds within a broader continuum in which forms echo, evolve, and reveal the profound connections that unite all living things.
Through richly textured surfaces combining pigments, metals, sand, and light, GRATALOUP developed a unique pictorial language that resists conventional classifications. A self-proclaimed heir to the Symbolist tradition, he sought not merely to depict the world but to reveal its hidden dimensions. His works give form to an intermediate realm where the visible encounters the invisible, and where matter becomes the vehicle for a spiritual and poetic experience.
In dialogue with the paintings, the monumental installation The Prophet’s Tent, displayed on a floor of petrified sand within the newly completed headquarters designed by architect Helmut Jahn, reflected on the fragility of civilizations and the passage of time. It extended the artist’s ongoing meditation on memory, transformation, and the enduring questions of human existence.
Through this body of work, GRATALOUP affirmed a profoundly humanistic vision of art: a painting that does not simply represent the world, but seeks to make visible what lies beyond it, revealing the mysterious forces that connect humanity, nature, and the cosmos.
