On the occasion of the inauguration of the stained-glass windows designed by GRATALOUP for the Saint-Saturnin Priory in Chevreuse, this exhibition highlights an essential dimension of his work: his enduring dialogue with architecture, light, and heritage.

Created as part of the restoration of this historic building, whose origins date back to the 11th century, the three stained-glass windows, produced in 2011 by the renowned Loire workshops, reflect the artist’s desire to renew the language of stained glass. Moving beyond traditional conventions, GRATALOUP developed a contemporary visual vocabulary in which light becomes matter, and colours and forms unfold with a new freedom, in perfect harmony with the spirit and history of the site.

This achievement forms part of a broader body of monumental and public artworks that includes mosaics, stained-glass windows, architectural commissions, and urban interventions, among them the celebrated Galilée mosaic tower at Paris La Défense. Through these projects, GRATALOUP consistently sought to create an art capable of engaging with its environment and placing contemporary creation at the heart of shared cultural heritage.

Displayed alongside the newly inaugurated stained-glass windows of the Priory, the paintings presented in this exhibition extend the same artistic quest. Through their gold backgrounds, rich materials, symbolic signs, and luminous compositions, they explore the invisible territories of the human psyche, the mysteries of memory, and the profound connections between humanity and the cosmos.
