SKY & EARTH
March 12, 2022 – September 30, 2022
Musée GRATALOUP 3 rue de l'Église | 78460 Chevreuse
On March 12, 2022, the Musée GRATALOUP opened its doors to the public in the chapel of the Prieuré Saint-Saturnin in Chevreuse. This inauguration carried a particularly emotional significance: only a few weeks earlier, on January 16, 2022, GRATALOUP had passed away, leaving behind more than sixty years of artistic creation.
Since 2020, Milena, his wife, had been leading the project to establish a museum dedicated to GRATALOUP’s work within the Prieuré Saint-Saturnin. The artist’s death occurred just weeks before the planned opening. Despite this loss, the project moved forward, and the museum opened to the public with its inaugural exhibition, Sky and Earth, marking both the birth of a new cultural institution and a tribute to the artist.
The theme of this first exhibition emerged naturally. It encapsulates the fundamental questions that run throughout GRATALOUP’s work: the relationship between the material and the spiritual, between humanity and nature, between the visible and the invisible. These ideas resonate particularly strongly through the final paintings created during the last two years of the artist’s life, mature works that concentrate many of the reflections and explorations that shaped his artistic journey.
The exhibition brought together a number of major paintings exploring themes of light, origins, landscape, time, and spirituality. Between earthly horizons and celestial spaces, GRATALOUP continued his search for a symbolic language capable of connecting human experience with the universal dimensions of existence.
From its very first season, the museum established a distinctive identity based on visitor engagement and an immersive encounter with the artwork. To make the richness of GRATALOUP’s symbolic language more accessible, each painting was accompanied by an audio podcast offering additional insights and interpretation. These commentaries provided visitors with keys to understanding the works while preserving the freedom of personal reflection.
The exhibition was further enhanced by a sound and light installation projected onto the vaulted ceilings of the Prieuré Saint-Saturnin. Light, music, and historic architecture entered into dialogue with the artworks, transforming the visit into a multisensory experience. Expanded and refined in subsequent seasons, these podcasts and monumental projections would become one of the defining signatures of the Musée GRATALOUP.
Through Sky and Earth, the museum laid the foundations of its cultural mission: creating a dialogue between heritage, contemporary art, and innovative forms of interpretation in order to make GRATALOUP’s universe accessible to the widest possible audience.
This inaugural exhibition remains a defining moment in the history of the museum, marked by the transmission of an artistic legacy, the birth of a new cultural venue, and the determination to ensure that the work of GRATALOUP continues to live on for future generations.
