In the summer of 2006, GRATALOUP presented the solo exhibition The Fir Tree Road, a body of work directly inspired by one of the most emblematic landscapes of the Haut-Bugey region. A few months after his exhibition in Leverkusen, Germany, the artist returned to his birthplace of Nantua to unveil a series dedicated to the legendary Route des Sapins, the scenic road that winds through the great fir forests linking Nantua to the Jura plateau. These landscapes had shaped his imagination since childhood and remained deeply embedded in his memory.

More than a depiction of nature, the series represents an exploration of landscape as memory. Under GRATALOUP’s brush, the fir trees of the Route des Sapins become living structures that organize pictorial space. Trunks, branches, and forest masses unfold into complex networks where direct observation of the natural world merges with inner vision.

The artist does not seek to reproduce a faithful panorama of the Haut-Bugey. As throughout his work, landscape serves as the starting point for a symbolic reflection. The forests appear as natural architectures, traversed by light, rhythm, and movement. The density of the trees creates spaces of depth through which the eye is invited to wander, lose itself, and discover hidden worlds.

In several works, tiny human figures confront the immensity of the forest. These discreet presences emphasize the power of the landscape and remind us of humanity’s modest place within the forces of nature. The forests of the Haut-Bugey thus become a metaphor for existence itself—a territory of contemplation where personal memory, the experience of time, and spiritual awareness converge.

The exhibition also holds a special place in the artist’s career. Presented in Nantua, his hometown, it coincided with the development of a project to create a Grataloup Foundation, intended to house a major donation of works by the artist on the shores of Lake Nantua. Through this initiative, GRATALOUP expressed his desire to anchor his life's work permanently within the territory that had shaped both his vision and his imagination.

Today, The Fir Tree Road stands as one of GRATALOUP’s most personal exhibitions. It brings together childhood memories, attachment to a native landscape, and the maturity of an artist who transforms a familiar environment into a universal meditation on nature, time, and humanity’s place in the world
