From April 1 to April 30, 2002, the Saint-Louis Chapel of the Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital in Paris hosted what remains one of the most ambitious and significant exhibitions ever dedicated to GRATALOUP. Organized with the support of Miguel Sieler, then President of Bayer France, this exceptional event marked a major milestone in the public recognition of the artist and in the presentation of his work.

Designed by GRATALOUP himself, the exhibition transformed the entire chapel into an immersive environment where architecture, painting, and installation art entered into a powerful dialogue. Bringing together an impressive selection of monumental works created over several decades, the exhibition offered visitors a journey that was at once artistic, spiritual, and symbolic.

Among the major works on display were the Fourteen Stations of the Cross, created between 1975 and 1985. The result of ten years of artistic development and reflection, this monumental ensemble demonstrates GRATALOUP’s enduring commitment to reinterpreting fundamental narratives through a distinctly contemporary visual language. Far from literal illustration, these stations offer a universal meditation on suffering, resilience, hope, and the human condition.

At the center of the chapel stood the monumental installation The Prophet’s Tent, the focal point of the exhibition. Rising more than 3.5 meters high, the structure was entirely covered in gold leaf and erected upon a vast bed of sand. A gilded brass ladder ascending toward its summit reinforced the symbolic power of the work. At once a shelter, a place of revelation, and a threshold between earth and sky, The Prophet’s Tent embodies many of the central themes of GRATALOUP’s artistic universe: spiritual quest, transcendence, the desert, and the search for the absolute.

The exhibition also presented, on an unprecedented scale, works from the Massabielle series, initiated in 1999 following the profound mystical experience the artist underwent in Lourdes. In these paintings, light becomes the very subject of the work. The compositions appear animated by an inner energy that transforms pictorial matter into a space of contemplation and revelation.

These works were presented alongside the first paintings from the Mountains and Genesis series, created between 2000 and 2003. Inspired by primordial landscapes and narratives of creation, these paintings explore the founding forces of the world, the emergence of life, and the profound relationship between humanity and nature. Mountains, horizons, and luminous movements become the elements of a vast pictorial cosmology in which creation remains in a constant state of becoming.

Through its scale, the quality of the works assembled, and the originality of its scenography, the exhibition represented the culmination of several decades of artistic research. It revealed the remarkable coherence of an oeuvre that, from its earliest beginnings, has explored the universal themes of creation, time, spirituality, and human destiny.

To accompany the exhibition, an important boxed exhibition catalogue was published with the support of the Galerie Enrico Navarra, a key partner in the project. Richly illustrated, the publication brought together critical essays, reproductions, and archival materials, further underscoring the significance of the exhibition within the history of GRATALOUP’s work.

Part thematic retrospective and part immersive experience, the Pitié-Salpêtrière exhibition remains one of the defining achievements of GRATALOUP’s career and a landmark moment in the public recognition of his artistic vision.
