Presented at the Galerie l’Indépendance in Luxembourg in 2007, From the Unreal to the Real brought together a major ensemble of GRATALOUP’s recent large-scale paintings. Following the success of his exhibition in Leverkusen, Germany, the artist was invited by Dexia BIL to exhibit in one of Luxembourg’s leading cultural venues, as the city celebrated its designation as European Capital of Culture. This exhibition marked an important stage in the international recognition of an artist whose work has consistently followed a singular path, independent of trends and artistic movements.

At the heart of the exhibition lies a profound exploration of the visible and the invisible. Starting from observations of the natural world, GRATALOUP transforms reality into worlds of invention, where matter, light, colour, and form reveal dimensions that lie beyond ordinary perception. His paintings inhabit a space between presence and disappearance, between the tangible and the immaterial, leading the viewer on a journey from the unreal toward the real.

Through the use of precious materials such as gold and silver, combined with sand, pigments, and textured surfaces, the artist creates images that seem suspended between earthly existence and cosmic transformation. Human figures emerge as luminous presences—often described as “spirits”—whose bodies dissolve into particles, constellations, and fields of energy. In these works, matter is never inert; it becomes the vehicle of a deeper reflection on the relationship between humanity and the universe.

Neither abstract nor figurative, GRATALOUP’s painting unfolds as a symbolic language. It invites us to look beyond appearances and to rediscover a world in which nature, imagination, and spiritual experience converge. Through this passage from the visible to the invisible, from material reality to inner vision, From the Unreal to the Real offers a meditation on the mysteries that connect the human condition to the infinite.
