In 1992, GRATALOUP presented an original exhibition entitled Writers Sign the Color at the legendary Closerie des Lilas, one of the most celebrated literary venues in Paris. The exhibition brought together two worlds that occupied a central place in his artistic vision: painting and literature.

During this period, the artist created an important series of watercolor works devoted to the themes of the body, sensuality, and desire. Far removed from any anecdotal or descriptive approach, these paintings explored sensuality as a symbolic territory in which the human figure became a place of encounter between emotion, imagination, and memory. The transparency of watercolor, the fluidity of the gesture, and the freedom of color endowed the series with remarkable spontaneity and intimacy.

For this exhibition, GRATALOUP conceived an unusual and highly personal project. He invited a number of writers he admired to intervene directly on the artworks themselves. Each author was asked to inscribe a dedication, a thought, a fragment of text, or a personal reflection onto a selected watercolor. The painting thus became a space of dialogue between image and writing, between the painter’s vision and the writer’s voice.

Among the authors who participated in this unique adventure were Michel Tournier, Marc Gaillard, Jean-Pierre Saccani, Michel Chaillou, and Frédéric Beigbeder. Their handwritten contributions did not serve to illustrate the works but rather to extend them, creating a free and spontaneous conversation between visual and literary language.

The choice of the Closerie des Lilas carried a powerful symbolic significance. For more than a century, the establishment had been associated with the history of Parisian literature and with writers such as Paul Verlaine, Guillaume Apollinaire, Ernest Hemingway, Henry Miller, and Samuel Beckett. By presenting this exhibition there, GRATALOUP placed his work within a long tradition of dialogue between the arts that has shaped French cultural life.

The watercolors also reveal a lesser-known aspect of the artist’s oeuvre. Alongside the monumental paintings and symbolic compositions for which he became widely recognized, these works demonstrate a more intimate practice, one in which immediacy, transparency, and the spontaneity of drawing play a central role.

Today, Writers Sign the Color remains one of the most singular exhibitions in GRATALOUP’s career. It perfectly illustrates his enduring desire to create bridges between artistic disciplines and to encourage exchanges between painting, literature, and poetry. Through the meeting of word and image, the exhibition affirms a vision of creation as a shared space where different forms of expression enrich and illuminate one another.
