From July 2nd to October 23, 2016, the Château de Vascœuil, one of France’s most prestigious private art centers, dedicated a major retrospective to the work of GRATALOUP. Presented within a venue that has welcomed some of the most celebrated artists of modern and contemporary art for more than fifty years, the exhibition marked a significant milestone in the painter’s career.

Since its creation in 1970, the Vascœuil Centre for Art and History has exhibited artists of international importance, including Salvador Dalí, Victor Vasarely, Bernard Buffet, Fernand Léger, Paul Delvaux, Georges Braque, Jean Cocteau, Corneille, Combas, Erró, Gérard Fromanger, Kijno, and Michel Ciry. GRATALOUP’s inclusion in this distinguished lineage represented a recognition of several decades of artistic creation and confirmed the singular place he occupies within the history of contemporary painting.

For this retrospective, more than fifty works were brought together, offering visitors a broad overview of the artist’s creative universe. The exhibition traced the major stages of his career through paintings from different periods, including symbolic figures, visionary landscapes, and works inspired by themes such as light, spirituality, the desert, the mountain, and the origins of creation.

This diversity revealed the profound coherence of GRATALOUP’s oeuvre. Beneath the variety of subjects lies a constant pursuit: the search for a symbolic language capable of connecting the visible and the invisible, reality and imagination, human experience and the great universal questions.

Displayed throughout the historic rooms of the château and its exceptional surroundings, the works entered into dialogue with a place where heritage, history, and contemporary creation have coexisted for decades. This encounter between GRATALOUP’s artistic vision and the spirit of Vascœuil gave the exhibition a particularly powerful dimension, inviting contemplation and discovery.

Beyond its artistic significance, the exhibition also marked the beginning of an important personal relationship. Following the event, a close friendship developed between Milena Cheynet de Beaupré and Marie-Laure Papillard, Director of the Château de Vascœuil. Over the years, Marie-Laure Papillard would become a constant source of support for Milena in the creation and development of the Musée GRATALOUP in Chevreuse.

Since the museum’s opening in 2022, the Château de Vascœuil has remained one of its most faithful partners. This collaboration is rooted in a shared commitment to the transmission of artistic heritage, the promotion of contemporary art, and the preservation of GRATALOUP’s work for future generations.

The Vascœuil exhibition remains one of the most important retrospectives organized during the artist’s lifetime and continues to stand as a major landmark in the history of his work.
