In 1967, while residing at the prestigious Casa de Velázquez in Madrid, GRATALOUP participated in a group exhibition at the Museo Nacional de Arte Contemporáneo, Spain’s leading institution dedicated to contemporary art.

This participation came at a pivotal moment in the artist’s development. As a laureate of the Institut de France and resident of the Casa de Velázquez, the young artist immersed himself in Spanish culture, studying the masterpieces of the Prado Museum and El Escorial while pursuing his own artistic research within Madrid’s vibrant creative environment. During this period, he encountered several major figures of post-war Spanish art, including Manolo Millares, Pablo Serrano, and José María de Villalba, whose work contributed significantly to the renewal of contemporary Spanish artistic expression.

Exhibiting at the Museo Nacional de Arte Contemporáneo represented an early recognition of GRATALOUP’s talent. At only thirty-two years of age, he was given the opportunity to present his work within Spain’s national institution devoted to contemporary creation, an environment that encouraged experimentation and dialogue between emerging and established artists.
