On the occasion of UEFA Euro 2016, La Chapelle de Clairefontaine brought together around forty contemporary artists for the exhibition Art and Football, exploring the many connections between artistic creation and the cultural imagination of the world’s most popular sport. Presented in the symbolic setting of Clairefontaine, home of the French National Football Centre, the exhibition examined how football has inspired artists and generated new forms of artistic expression over the past several decades.

For this exhibition, GRATALOUP’s work Voyance (Vision) was presented. Created in 1998 during the FIFA World Cup hosted and won by France, the piece transcends its immediate sporting context to explore broader themes of destiny, belief, anticipation, and hope—ideas that accompany every major competition. Through this singular work, GRATALOUP transforms the language of football into a reflection on desire, expectation, and collective imagination.

Voyance occupies a unique place within the artist’s body of work. Following its creation, the piece was retained by Galerie Enrico Navarra, which subsequently presented it in Japan in 2001 as part of an exhibition organized jointly by Galerie Enrico Navarra and Galerie Hyundai. Fifteen years later, the gallery chose to exhibit the work once again within Art and Football, highlighting its enduring relevance at the intersection of contemporary art and sporting mythology.

Through its inclusion in this exhibition, Voyance demonstrates how football extends far beyond the realm of competition to become a powerful cultural and symbolic phenomenon. Beneath the spectacle of the game lie collective narratives, beliefs, and modern myths that resonate deeply with the recurring themes of GRATALOUP’s work: symbolism, memory, transformation, and the invisible forces that shape human destinies.

Presented at Clairefontaine, one of the most iconic sites in French football, Voyance acquired a renewed significance, linking the memory of the 1998 World Cup to a broader reflection on the hopes, dreams, and shared imaginaries that accompany great collective adventures.
