In 1976, GRATALOUP presented a major solo exhibition at Galerie Marquet, devoted to the Bories series, created in his studio at 37 rue Henri-Barbusse, Paris. This exhibition marked a significant stage in the development of his work, deepening his exploration of archetypes, the memory of civilizations, and the relationships between the human body, architecture, and landscape.

Taking as his point of departure the bories—the traditional dry-stone structures characteristic of southern France—the artist quickly moved beyond simple architectural representation. Under his gaze, the borie became a universal form, a fundamental sign evoking shelter, primitive dwelling, sanctuary, and the memory of origins.

Through his techniques of matrices, repetition, and frottage, GRATALOUP transformed the stone structure into an almost organic presence. The walls appear alive, traversed by networks of lines and textures that gradually dissolve the boundary between human construction and natural form. Pictorial matter replaces description, giving these architectures a timeless and symbolic dimension.

Yet the series also reveals a deeper level of meaning. In several works, the central opening of the borie acquires an explicit symbolic value. It evokes the womb, birth, fertility, and the primordial forces of creation. The series reflects GRATALOUP’s growing interest in the symbolic structures underlying human cultures. After his explorations of the Irish Sea landscapes and natural phenomena, his attention turned toward the traces left by civilizations and the elemental forms that connect humanity to its most ancient origins.

Through the Bories, GRATALOUP does not depict a rural monument; rather, he develops a profound meditation on memory, desire, fertility, and the mystery of creation.
