PAINTER
2001 - CRASHES
Artists are visionaries and sometimes even more so since they sometimes feel the events even before they occur.
July-August 2001, GRATALOUP spends its holidays in Lacanau with Milena and Constant, to whom his father has just offered small planes in polystyrene.
Suddenly very inspired by small toys, he will integrate them in a series of canvases representing a plane crashed on a mountain background. The artist will also make objects on the theme of the crash.
A few weeks later, on September 11, two planes hit the twin towers of the World Trade Center (WTC) in Manhattan, New York, and a third the Pentagon, headquarters of the Department of Defense, in Washington DC, killing everyone on board and many others working in these buildings ...
"Premonitory… Indeed, I had never painted plane crashes before July 2001 when I did it. Premonitory? But then, is the small aircraft salesman also a visionary being? Let’s stay on the ambiguity."
