1986 - 1990 ICARE'S FALL IN MINERAL LANDSCAPE
During a trip to Chamonix, GRATALOUP is a day trip on the Mer de Glace and the Bossons glacier. He loves the mountain which is a great source of inspiration for him. His early childhood in Haut-Bugey and the mountainous landscapes of this region permeated his vision of the world.
He directed many series on the theme of the mountain during his life, including the series of "self-portraits" that represented him, which fell into a
glacier crevasse.
At that time, it will again incorporate, in this ice landscape, the myth of Icarus, which appeared as evidence to him as he walked on the glacier.
The tight graphics present on this series are representative of the Sea of Ice whose curves, on some canvases, symbolize, by the rainbow, the alliance of the earth and the sky.
"The Sea of Ice made me think of the altitude and the altitude in Icarus that could have jumped there and fallen."
