In 2004, Daniel Boulogne, patron of the arts and longtime supporter of numerous contemporary artists, launched the ambitious collective project The Wall of Sound. Built around the transformation of a major symbol of twentieth-century technological achievement, the project brought together artists invited to create original works from fragments of the first commercial Boeing aircraft ever put into service.

After acquiring and dismantling the aircraft, Daniel Boulogne distributed selected components to artists whose work he admired, encouraging each of them to reinterpret a piece of aviation history through their own artistic language. The resulting works were brought together in the inaugural presentation of The Wall of Sound, held at the Galeries Lafayette in Paris in April 2004.

For this project, GRATALOUP received two wing fragments from the aircraft and transformed them into a work entitled The Paths of the Sky (Les Voies du Ciel). Far from emphasizing the industrial origin of the material, the artist elevated it into a symbolic meditation on travel, memory, and spiritual aspiration. Once designed to carry passengers across continents, these fragments became, in his hands, traces of a journey between earth and sky, between the material world and the realm of imagination.

The work reflects several recurring themes in GRATALOUP’s oeuvre: transformation, the passage of time, the memory embedded in matter, and humanity’s enduring fascination with the infinite. By reimagining these relics of modern aviation, the artist transformed an object of technological progress into a poetic reflection on movement, destiny, and transcendence.

Following its creation, The Paths of the Sky became part of the travelling exhibition The Wall of Sound, which was subsequently presented at the Autoworld Museum in Brussels in 2005, at Les Cordeliers in Châteauroux in 2006, and again at the Galeries Lafayette Haussmann in Paris in 2012. Through these successive presentations, the work reached diverse audiences while continuing to embody the dialogue between history, technology, and artistic imagination that lay at the heart of Daniel Boulogne’s project.

Today, The Paths of the Sky remains a remarkable example of GRATALOUP’s ability to reveal unexpected meanings within existing materials, transforming fragments of the physical world into symbols of memory, exploration, and human aspiration.
